Besides providing support for the roof rafters and purlins add to the interior beauty so you often see log purlins and rafters that match the wall logs.
Roof framing plan with purlins.
The point at which all the rafters are attached to.
Transfers the load of the roof through the raftersto walls below.
This leaves in hangers between trusses as your only viable and practical design solution.
Also referred to as secondary structurals this type of framing runs in between primary framing elements creating a structure within a structure much like cross beams in a wooden building.
The roof support system is a ridgepole and either rafters which run perpendicular from the top of the walls to the ridge or purlins which run parallel to the ridge.
In large buildings where heavy trusses are used the purlins are continuous members that rest.
Secondary framing is an important component of many pre engineered metal buildings.
I have a roof structure containing of z purlins.
The longitudinal horizontal beam that is sitting on a post or the principal rafter of a truss and used to support common rafters.
A 2 4 wall with a 2 6 rafter can be notched for a 4 seat.
In small roofs purlins are inserted between the rafters and nailed through the rafters.
A common arrangement is a rafter and purlin system which combines purlins and rafters.
For our 4 x8 lean to example using a 2 4 rafter the depth of the birdsmouth is limited by the 1 3 depth of the rafter rule.
Can purlins be rotated to orient parallel to the rafters or trusses.
Over top also means purlins get staggered when they overlap.
You may want to ask the support department to see if they have a way to place the members this way.
Purlins are placed perpendicular to the roof framing in lieu of the sheathing.
Technically their is only 4mm of offset between these two beam systems.

Purlins purlins are used in roof construction to support corrugated sheet metal if it is used or to support the sheathing of roofs framed with trusses.
There are three types of purlins in wood construction.
The strip of iron attached to the purlin.
These are lapped at each grid line by 15 of their length.
This precludes abilities to predrill roof steel.
In the order shown above purlins laying flat use 2 20d ring shank nails per connection for trusses with minimal spacing hung purlins for wide span trusses lu26 hangers for 2 6 lu28 hangers for 2 8 etc and purlins on edge overlapped not butted for mid range to wide span trusses 8 or 9 spacings installed with 1 60d galvanized ring shank nail.
Use a framing square to help lay out the notch based on the slope of the roof.
Predrilling gives nice straight screw lines and also eliminates possibilities of missing a purlin with a screw.
